2021 Philadelphia Marathon

2021 Philadelphia Marathon

Marathon Swim Bike Run Triathlon Goal

The Philadelphia Marathon was just last Sunday, I raced it for the 3rd time and I achieved my goal.

I raced the Philly Marathon for the first time in 2011, my boss was running and training for the event for over a year. I have a cycling and running background from my younger age, so listening to him about running was bringing good memories. Back then I was not exercising regularly anymore, I just came to the US by myself the year before and I was still barely speaking english, I was going out every weekend, eating fast food almost every day, drinking and smoking... So clearly I was not in the best shape to run a marathon but I decided to do it anyway. I never raced a marathon before that year, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to start exercising again and meet people. My training was very short and sweet, within the two weeks prior the race, I ran a 5k two times. And Yes, that was it. I showed up to the marathon, I ran at a decent pace and I kept telling myself "it is ok to slow down, but do not walk" because I knew that would be the end of it. Surprisingly, I finished the race in 4h12min, I beat my boss who trained for over a year, and my friends, who were at the finish line to support us, gave me a cigarette and a beer to celebrate.

In 2019, I raced Philly again for my second marathon, but this time I was training, eating healthy and not smoking anymore :)  In that year, I started being serious again about running and biking, and decided to focus on a triathlon lifestyle. I raced a few sprint and olympic distance triathlons in preparation of my two main objectives, which were the Atlantic City Ironman 70.3 and the Philly Marathon. I finished the marathon in 3h26min.

In 2021, in-person racing came back, my race schedule got quite busy with 5k runs to start the year, Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, Eagleman 70.3 and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in St George, UH. Thanks to a good training program and a good racing schedule, I finished my season with the Philly Marathon and a new personal record of 3h12min.

I am very stoked to be capable to achieved my goal, 2021 has been a great performing year for me. I won a few local races, I had a new Ironman 70.3 personal record, I qualified and participated to the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (very proud of it), and now I have a new Marathon personal record.

To progress in life, you need to push you limits. 2022 is going to be even more challenging than 2021, with at least 2 Ironman 70.3, my first full Ironman and hopefully a qualification for the Boston Marathon if I can run under 3h05min.
